Sustainability Internship: Climate & Reporting 2027
- Hybrid
- Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands
- €800 per month
- Sustainability Advisory Team
Job description
Nexio Projects is looking for two Sustainability Interns to support our consultants in delivering sustainability finance and reporting work for clients. You will help put climate-related risks and decarbonisation choices into financial terms, build Excel-based models and business cases, and support clients with their CSRD/ESRS and IFRS S2 reporting. Along the way, you will contribute to client projects, take on your own internship mission and learn directly from senior consultants. This internship suits a final-stage or recent Master's student in finance, economics, econometrics or a related quantitative field who wants to specialise in climate and sustainability, or a sustainability student with strong quantitative and Excel skills who wants to apply them in a hands-on, client-facing consultancy setting.
Hi, we’re Nexio Projects! 🌍
Nexio Projects is a sustainability consultancy of 40+ people headquartered in Rotterdam, serving hundreds of European mid-market clients across CSRD/ESRS, EcoVadis, B Corp, CDP and net-zero strategy. We are a certified B Corp (one of the highest-scoring B Corp consultancies in the Benelux), a certified Great Place To Work®, a top-rated consulting firm per Verdantix and consultancy.nl, and a Platinum EcoVadis strategic consulting partner. We practise what we advise, and we hire people who combine technical rigour with a light touch: human, humble, hardworking and allergic to taking themselves too seriously.
Your mission 🍀
You will be working alongside our consultants on live client projects, getting hands-on with the kind of work that actually moves the needle on sustainability, with a particular focus on where sustainability meets finance: putting climate risks and decarbonisation choices into financial terms and supporting clients' CSRD/ESRS and IFRS S2 reporting. As part of your time with us, you will also take on a personal internship mission: a defined project you can call your own (for example a reusable decarbonisation business-case template or a climate risk quantification tool), develop, and finish with something concrete to show for it. On top of that, you will learn fast, contribute meaningfully, and be part of a team that does its work passionately.
Job requirements
What you’ll deliver 🧭
Support ESG assessments, carbon footprint calculations, and sustainability gap analyses, including CSRD/ESRS readiness checks, for clients across sectors.
Build quantitative emissions models, collecting, cleaning, and interpreting large volumes of activity data to produce accurate Scope 1, 2, and 3 inventories that also underpin carbon cost and climate risk analyses.
Support the team in quantifying climate-related risks and opportunities in financial terms, for example estimating a client's carbon cost exposure under different carbon price scenarios, or the financial impact of physical hazards on key assets.
Help build Excel-based financial models, such as decarbonisation business cases, Marginal Abatement Cost Curves and internal carbon pricing analyses, under the guidance of senior consultants.
Contribute to the preparation of financial effects disclosures under ESRS E1 and IFRS S2, and to data and documentation work that helps make clients' sustainability data audit-ready.
Support the team in developing client-ready sustainability roadmaps and improvement plans, grounded in data and aligned with relevant reporting frameworks.
Apply and learn assessment methodologies, including EcoVadis, B Corp, and CDP, and reporting standards such as GRI, UNGC, ESRS and IFRS S1/S2.
Produce well-structured reports, presentations, and data visualisations that translate technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
Support project managers on client-facing calls and assist with preparing client deliverables.
Build and maintain internal knowledge databases, capturing key regulations and regulatory developments (such as the Omnibus changes and ESRS revisions), data sources, and methodological insights to strengthen collective expertise.
Research emerging sustainability topics and contribute creative, evidence-based approaches to complex client challenges.
Support the development of our sustainability finance services by researching market developments, preparing input for proposals and thought leadership, and helping turn project lessons into reusable templates and tools.
What you bring 🎒
A Master's degree (in its final stage or completed) in Finance, Economics, Econometrics, Business, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related quantitative discipline, ideally with coursework or a thesis touching on climate, sustainability or sustainable finance.
At least six months of relevant internship or research experience. Prior exposure to a consultancy or analytical environment is an advantage.
Strong quantitative and data analysis skills. You are comfortable working with large datasets, building structured models in Excel, interpreting emissions data, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. Experience with tools such as Python, R, or Power BI is a meaningful plus.
A solid grounding in finance fundamentals from your studies, such as reading financial statements, NPV/IRR and discounting, and scenario and sensitivity analysis. A genuine interest in how carbon prices, energy costs and physical climate risks affect a company's costs, assets and cash flows is a strong plus.
A good understanding of carbon accounting, particularly Scope 1, 2, and 3 calculations under the GHG Protocol, and/or life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology.
Familiarity with ESG frameworks and reporting standards, including EcoVadis, B Corp, CDP, GRI, UNGC, and ESRS, is a significant advantage.
Fluency with AI tools and a genuine curiosity about how they can accelerate our work, whether that means automating workflows, cleaning and analysing data, experimenting with AI agents, or working with platforms such as Power BI, Zapier, or similar.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and a drive to build advanced skills quickly, particularly in Excel (financial and data modelling, structured datasets) and PowerPoint (clear, insight-led presentations).
Fluency in English. Fluency in French or Dutch is a plus.
The ability to communicate complex, data-heavy findings clearly and concisely, both in writing and in client-facing settings.
A proactive, collaborative working style where you take ownership, ask good questions, and deliver on time.
What we offer 🎁
An internship allowance of €800 per month.
12 days off during your six-month internship.
Up to 4 weeks of working from abroad, from anywhere in the world, agreed with your manager. This is available from your third month onwards.
Hands-on learning experience where sustainability meets finance, on live client projects covering climate risk quantification, decarbonisation business cases and CSRD/ESRS and IFRS S2 reporting.
Your own internship mission, shaped with your manager in your first weeks, so you leave with a concrete piece of work to show for it.
Close guidance from senior consultants, regular check-ins and a formal mid-internship review in month 4, including a conversation about what could come after your internship
Hybrid working, with a MacBook Air provided, a screen for your home office on request and a €15 monthly internet allowance. You will work fully on-site during your first month to get to know the team.
Commuting costs covered from anywhere in the Netherlands: train travel between your nearest station and Rotterdam Centraal, or, if you live in Rotterdam, a free Swapfiets subscription or covered public transport to the office.
Unlimited, confidential mental health support through Open-Up.
A lively office in Rotterdam, with Vegan Tuesdays, fortnightly gratitude awards, twice-yearly team events, Earth Day volunteering and a dog-friendly office.
